When is the best time to prune trees in Boulder?

Late winter through early spring, before bud break, is the best window for most species in Boulder. The tree is dormant, the branch structure is fully visible with the leaves off, and wound response is strong going into the growing season. Dead and hazardous limbs are the exception and can be removed at any time of year. Ash trees are a special case: work on ash is best scheduled outside adult emerald ash borer flight season.

How often should a mature tree be pruned?

Most established shade trees in Boulder do well on a three to five year cycle. Young trees benefit from lighter, more frequent structural pruning every two to three years while their permanent branch architecture is being set. Annual heavy pruning is usually a sign something is being over-managed.

Is topping a tree ever a good idea?

No. Topping cuts a tree back to stubs, removes the leaf area it needs to feed itself, and triggers a flush of weakly attached water sprouts. Those sprouts are more likely to fail in wind and snow than the limbs that were removed. If a tree is genuinely too large for its site, the correct options are a proper crown reduction by an ISA Certified Arborist, or removal and replacement with an appropriately sized species.

Will pruning hurt my tree?

Correct pruning does not hurt a healthy tree, but every cut is a wound, so the amount matters. Removing too much live canopy at once stresses the tree and can trigger decline. A conservative approach that removes what is necessary and leaves the tree enough leaf area to recover is the standard we work to.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Boulder?

It depends on where the tree stands. Trees in the public right-of-way, which in Boulder commonly means the strip between the sidewalk and the street, are managed by the City and work on them requires city involvement and a licensed certified arborist. Trees fully on private property are generally the owner's decision. Because the boundary is not always obvious from the curb, confirm the tree's status with City of Boulder Forestry before scheduling removal.

What is the best time of year to remove a tree?

For ash trees specifically, Boulder County guidance points to roughly September through April, outside adult emerald ash borer flight season, to limit spread. For other species, dormant season removal is often easier on the surrounding landscape because the ground is firmer and there is less to damage. Genuinely hazardous trees should not wait for a season.

Why is removing a dead ash tree more expensive than removing a live one?

Once an ash is killed by emerald ash borer it dries out, becomes brittle, and is no longer safe to climb. The work has to shift to equipment or more elaborate rigging, which takes longer and costs more. The City of Boulder makes this point directly: if an infested ash is coming out, it is cheaper and safer to remove it before it dies.

Will you grind the stump too?

Stump work is quoted alongside the removal. Whether grinding makes sense depends on access for the machine, what is buried nearby, and whether you plan to replant in the same spot. That gets covered during the site visit.

How do I know if my tree is sick or just stressed?

Look for a pattern rather than a single symptom. Crown thinning, dieback that starts at the top and works down, early fall color, excessive sprouting along the trunk, and branches that leaf out late are all signals worth an inspection. Because several very different problems produce similar-looking decline, the value of a site visit is in separating an insect problem from a disease problem from a root-zone problem before anyone spends money treating the wrong one.

What is a trunk injection and why use it instead of spraying?

A trunk injection places treatment directly into the tree's vascular system, which then distributes it through the canopy. Compared with a broadcast foliar spray it uses far less material, does not drift onto neighboring plants, pets, or people, and is not washed off by weather. It is the standard delivery method for systemic pest and disease treatments in mature landscape trees.

How long does a trunk injection last?

It depends entirely on the product. The City of Boulder's own public ash program uses emamectin benzoate on a three-year rotation, while azadirachtin is generally repeated every one to two years and a dinotefuran bark spray is annual. The important point is that preventive treatment is ongoing: if you are treating a tree to keep it alive against a pest like emerald ash borer, the treatments have to continue indefinitely.

Can a tree in decline actually be saved?

Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The determining factor is usually how far the decline has progressed before an arborist looks at it. A tree with most of its canopy intact and a correctly identified, treatable problem has a good outlook. A tree that has been losing ground for five years and has lost most of its leaf area has far less to work with.

Is there still an emerald ash borer quarantine in Boulder County?

No. Colorado established a quarantine around Boulder County to limit the movement of ash wood after EAB was found here, but according to the Colorado State Forest Service that quarantine was repealed effective December 30, 2019. EAB itself is still very much present and active in Boulder. The absence of a formal quarantine does not mean the pest is gone, and Boulder County still advises handling ash wood and scheduling ash removals with spread in mind.

How can I tell if my ash tree has emerald ash borer?

Symptoms usually start at the top of the tree and move downward. Watch for general decline, crown thinning, dead branches, excessive sprouting along the trunk, and early fall color. The more specific signs are S-shaped tunnels under the bark and small D-shaped exit holes on the bark surface. Woodpecker damage is often the first thing homeowners actually notice: birds strip the gray outer bark to reach larvae, and the pale inner bark they expose is visible from the ground.

How long does an ash tree survive once it is infested?

Once infested, an ash typically dies within a few years, and it deteriorates fast in the final stage. That timeline is why waiting is the expensive choice. Once the tree is symptomatic it is no longer safe for an arborist to climb, so the removal has to be done with equipment or heavier rigging and the cost goes up.

Is it worth treating my ash tree or should I just remove it?

Treating is worth it for a structurally sound ash in a location where you value the tree, and pesticide treatment is inexpensive compared with removal plus replacement. The commitment is that treatment must continue indefinitely to keep the tree alive. If the tree is already in significant decline, poorly placed, or structurally compromised, removal and replanting with a non-ash species is the better long-term investment. An assessment tells you which category your tree is in.

Can I treat the ash tree in front of my house on the city strip?

Not on your own initiative. Ash trees in the public right-of-way are city trees. Boulder does allow adjacent property owners to treat public street right-of-way ash with Boulder Forestry's permission, through the city's process. Confirm with City of Boulder Forestry before arranging any treatment on a right-of-way tree.

What is defensible space and how much do I need?

Defensible space is the managed area around a structure where fuel has been reduced enough to slow a fire and give firefighters somewhere safe to work. It is organized in zones by distance from the building, and the zone immediately against the structure matters most. The right treatment for a specific property depends on slope, aspect, dominant vegetation, and how the structure is built, which is what an on-site assessment determines.

What are ladder fuels?

Ladder fuels are the intermediate layers of vegetation that connect ground fuel to the tree canopy: tall grass into shrubs, shrubs into low branches, low branches into the crown. A fire in the grass alone is survivable for most trees and structures. A fire that can climb that ladder into the canopy becomes a crown fire, which is far more dangerous and much harder to stop. Removing the middle rungs is one of the highest-value mitigation steps available.

Does wildfire mitigation mean cutting down all my trees?

No. Mitigation is about spacing, connection, and dead material, not clearing a property. A well-mitigated lot can keep substantial healthy tree cover. The work usually looks like raising the lower canopy, thinning dense clumps so crowns are not touching, removing dead wood and heavy shrub mass near the house, and pulling growth off the roof.

Can you assess an HOA or shared common area?

Yes. HOA and shared common area assessment is part of this service. Common areas are frequently where the untreated fuel actually sits, so evaluating them alongside individual lots gives an association a realistic picture of its exposure.

What is a codominant union and why is it a problem?

A codominant union is where two stems of roughly equal size meet, with neither one clearly dominant. Because neither is subordinate, the joint between them is often shallower and weaker than a normal branch attachment. When bark gets trapped inside the joint, an included union, there is even less connecting wood. Under snow load or wind these unions can split, and the failure typically takes a very large portion of the tree with it.

How long does tree cabling last?

A properly installed braided cable support system is designed to last for years, but it is not permanent and unmonitored. The tree keeps growing around and against the hardware, so any cabled tree needs periodic inspection to confirm the system is still doing its job and still correctly fitted. Cabling is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time installation.

Will cabling guarantee my tree will not fail?

No, and any arborist promising that is overselling. Cabling meaningfully reduces the risk of a specific union failing under load. It does not make a tree immune to an extreme weather event, and it does nothing about unrelated defects elsewhere in the tree. It is a risk reduction measure applied to a defect that has been identified and evaluated.

What is the best time to plant a tree in Boulder?

Spring and fall are both workable in Boulder, and each has a tradeoff. Spring planting gives the tree a full growing season to establish roots before winter, but it also means facing summer heat while the root system is still small. Fall planting takes advantage of cooler weather and warm soil for root growth, but the tree needs enough time before hard freeze. Either way, consistent establishment watering matters more than the exact planting month.

What should I plant instead of an ash tree?

Something other than another ash, and ideally not whatever your neighbors just planted either. Boulder's ash losses are a direct lesson in what happens when a single genus dominates a neighborhood canopy. The City's approach when removing infested public ash is to replace with a diverse mix of large-maturing, non-ash species. The right specific choice for your yard depends on your space, soil, exposure, and irrigation, which is what the site visit sorts out.

How deep should a tree be planted?

The trunk flare, where the trunk widens into the roots, should be visible at or slightly above the finished grade. Planting too deep is one of the most common causes of slow decline in landscape trees, and the damage takes years to show up, by which point the cause is easy to miss. Nursery stock frequently arrives with the flare already buried in the container, so it has to be located rather than assumed.

How much water does a newly planted tree need?

More than most people expect, for longer than most people expect, and delivered slowly. A new tree needs deep, infrequent watering that reaches the whole root ball rather than brief surface sprinkling, and it needs that support through at least the first two to three growing seasons. In Boulder's dry winters, occasional winter watering during warm dry stretches also matters for young trees.

My tree is leaning. Is it going to fall?

Not necessarily. Many trees grow with a permanent lean toward light and are perfectly stable. What matters is whether the lean is new, whether there is soil heaving or cracking on the tension side, whether roots have been cut or the grade changed nearby, and whether there is decay at the base. A lean that appeared suddenly after a storm is a different situation from one the tree has held for twenty years, and it deserves prompt inspection.

What does an arborist actually look at during an assessment?

The whole tree and its setting. Crown density and where dieback is occurring, the trunk and any unions for cracks or included bark, evidence of decay such as fungal fruiting bodies, the root zone and any recent disturbance like construction or grade changes, and what sits beneath the tree. Risk is a combination of likelihood of failure and consequence if it happens, so the target underneath is part of the evaluation.

How often should my trees be inspected?

For most established landscape trees an inspection every few years is reasonable, with young trees benefiting from more frequent visits while their structure is being established. Any tree should be looked at after a significant storm, after nearby construction or grade work, or whenever you notice a change in the canopy. Mature trees over a house or a driveway justify closer attention than trees at the back of a lot.

How often should I deep water a mature tree in Boulder?

Infrequently and thoroughly rather than briefly and often. The point of a deep watering is to build a water table roughly 14 inches down, and that reservoir then supports the tree for a stretch. Frequent light watering keeps moisture in the top few inches where grass and evaporation get it first, and it encourages shallow rooting. During the dry season, plan on sustained two hour or longer applications rather than adding minutes to your lawn schedule.

Can I just leave my lawn sprinklers on longer instead?

Lawn irrigation is designed for turf, which means short frequent cycles over a shallow root zone. That is close to the opposite of what a tree needs. It is also delivering water to the grass that is competing with your tree. Watering a tree well usually means putting a sprinkler on the root zone specifically, running it far longer than any lawn cycle, and ideally removing the turf immediately around the base of the tree.

Should I water trees in winter in Boulder?

Yes, during warm dry stretches, particularly for young and newly planted trees. Boulder winters are dry and windy, and roots continue to lose moisture even when the tree is dormant and there is nothing visible happening above ground. Water on a day when the ground is not frozen, in the middle of the day so it can soak in rather than sit and freeze.

Is watering close to the trunk the right place?

No. The absorbing roots are spread out under and beyond the canopy, not clustered against the trunk. Water applied only at the trunk keeps the trunk flare wet, which is not helpful, and misses most of the root system. Cover the area under the canopy instead. The same principle is why mulch should be spread across the root zone but kept off the trunk itself.

Should I remove weed barrier that has been in place for years?

Around a tree, generally yes. The longer it has been in place, the more likely the soil under it is dry, compacted, and low on organic matter, and the more the tree has been quietly paying for it. Removing it and replacing it with thick mulch lets water and air reach the root zone again. This is straightforward enough to do by hand, and it is one of the things looked at during a property walk-through.

Is rock mulch better than wood mulch around a tree in Colorado?

Rock does not deliver what soil actually needs. It provides some insulation and it suppresses weeds, but it adds no organic matter as it never breaks down, and it absorbs and radiates heat into the root zone in a climate that is already hot and dry in summer. Organic mulch retains moisture, moderates soil temperature, allows oxygen exchange, and improves the soil over time.

How thick should mulch be around a tree?

Thick enough to insulate the soil and hold moisture in it, spread across the root zone rather than mounded up against the trunk. Mulch piled against the trunk flare traps moisture against bark that is not built for it and invites decay and pests. Spread it out, keep it off the flare, and refresh it as it decomposes.

Does removing grass around a tree really matter that much?

Yes, and it is one of the easier wins on a property. Grass has a dense shallow root system directly above the tree's absorbing roots and it takes most of any water applied. It works like a basil plant in a small pot: water it thoroughly and the soil is dry the next day, because the dense roots pulled all of it out. Replacing turf at the base of a tree with mulch stops that competition and improves moisture retention, oxygen flow, and insulation at the same time.

Will my ash tree definitely die if I do not treat it?

According to the City of Boulder, all sizes of ash in Boulder, including very healthy trees, will eventually be killed by emerald ash borer unless treated with an effective pesticide. The timeline varies with local EAB pressure, but the direction is not in question.

How fast does EAB kill a tree once it is in there?

Once infested, an ash typically declines and dies within a few years, and the final phase is quick. More importantly for planning purposes, the tree becomes unsafe to climb once it is symptomatic, so the practical window for a straightforward removal closes before the tree is actually dead.

Can I move the wood from my removed ash tree?

Be careful with it. Although the Colorado quarantine around Boulder County was repealed effective December 30, 2019, EAB spreads over long distances precisely by moving ash material: logs, branches, firewood, nursery stock, chips, and mulch. Boulder County guidance still addresses the handling of that material, and the safe practice is to not haul ash wood out of the area.

Should I replant another ash?

No. Boulder's experience is the clearest possible case against it. When the City removes an infested public ash it replaces it, where possible, with a diverse mix of large-maturing, non-ash species, specifically so a single pest cannot take out the canopy again.

Can I prune my trees in summer?

You can, and light summer work is sometimes the right call, for instance to remove deadwood, clear a specific conflict with a structure, or correct storm damage. What summer is not good for is heavy structural pruning, because you are working blind in a full canopy and removing leaf area during the tree's working season.

Does pruning make a tree grow faster?

No. Pruning removes the leaf area a tree uses to produce energy, so a heavily pruned tree has less capacity, not more. It can redirect growth into the limbs you keep, and it can improve long-term structure and health, which is the actual goal. Growth rate is not the metric.

Should pruning wounds be painted or sealed?

No. Wound dressings and pruning paints are not recommended. They do not speed sealing and can trap moisture against the wound. A correctly placed cut at the branch collar lets the tree seal itself, which is what it evolved to do.

How do I know if my tree was pruned badly?

Look for flush cuts made tight against the trunk, stub cuts that left several inches of dead branch, large wounds high in the canopy where a limb was cut mid-branch, and dense clusters of thin vertical sprouts around old cuts. That last one is the signature of past topping and warrants an assessment, because the regrowth is weakly attached.

How far out from the house does defensible space need to go?

Defensible space is organized in zones by distance, with the closest zone being the most critical and treatment extending outward from there. The right distances and intensity for a specific property depend on slope, aspect, dominant vegetation type, and construction, which is what an on-site assessment determines. A steep slope below a house behaves very differently from flat ground.

Is fire mitigation a one-time job?

No. Vegetation regrows, grass cures every summer, and dead material accumulates every year. Mitigation is maintenance on a cycle, not a project you finish. The heavy initial work is the largest single effort, and after that it is periodic upkeep.

What is the best time of year to do mitigation work?

Outside of active fire season and outside of high-wind periods is preferable, and cooler months are generally easier for the work itself. That said, mitigation done at a non-ideal time is far better than mitigation deferred another year. If a property has continuous fuel to the structure, that is the priority regardless of the month.

Do I need mitigation if I am not in the mountains?

Grass and brush fires driven by wind on flat ground have caused severe losses in this county, well outside forested terrain. If you have continuous fine fuel approaching your structure, shrub mass against the siding, or tree limbs on the roof, mitigation applies to you regardless of elevation.
